How to take a passport photo with your phone
You can shoot an ID photo at home, but whether it is accepted depends on the issuing authority’s measurements, not on how good the photo looks. Read the requirements first, then shoot.

Read the requirements before you shoot
Passports, driving licences, visas and school applications do not share one standard. Background colour, how much of the frame the head must fill, rules on glasses and head coverings — all vary. Note the exact requirement first. Cropping afterwards often will not save the shot, because if the head-to-frame ratio is wrong from the start, cropping cannot fix it.
Light: face a window
ID photos call for flat, shadow-free lighting. The simplest way to get it is to stand facing a window in daylight — with the window behind you, your face comes out dark. A ceiling light alone is poor: it drops shadows under the eyes and nose.
Background: plain wall, one step away
A light, pattern-free wall is enough. Do not stand against it; step forward so your own shadow does not fall on it. That shadow is what stops a background from reading as a flat colour.
Pose and expression
Shoulders square to the camera, head straight, eyes on the lens. Neutral expression, mouth closed — some authorities reject even a slight smile. Hold the phone at eye level: shooting from below enlarges the chin, from above the forehead.
Front camera or rear camera
The rear camera is sharper on almost every phone. Using a timer, or asking someone to press the button, beats switching to the front camera.
Where editing stops
Retouching an ID photo is a risk. Anything that changes facial proportions — slimming, shifting skin tone, heavy smoothing — can get the photo rejected. Clearing a temporary spot is usually fine; reshaping a face is not.
The ID AI look in Glooowe exists to produce a plain white background and even lighting. Checking the result against your authority’s rules is still your job — no app can promise acceptance.
Frequently asked questions
Will an AI-generated ID photo be accepted?
That depends entirely on the authority. Many official applications require a photo in which facial features have not been altered. When in doubt, submit the unedited frame.
Can I replace the background with white afterwards?
You can, but traces around hair edges are usually visible. Shooting against a plain wall gives a cleaner result.
What resolution do I need?
Authorities normally specify a print size and a resolution. Glooowe exports at 1080 px on the long edge for free and 2048 px with Pro; if a print is required, 2048 px is the safer choice.
